Lettuce Tree is a soft-wooded, brittle-branched tree
of the Bougainvillea family that grows to as much as 1-5 m tall.
Oblong-ovate, light green leaves are up to 20 cm long.
The tree bears very small and inconspicuous flowers that are white in
color. Flowers are borne in small globular clusters. The flowers gives
rise to small, hairy, club-shaped fruits, about 2 cm long. Borne in rows.
Lettuce Tree is found in SE Kenya to NE Tanzania, India to Pacific.
The leaves are traditionally used as a leaf vegetable in some
countries. They were part of the traditional Maldivian cuisine in
dishes such as mas huni.
