Modest Habenaria is a medium to large sized
terrestrial orchid with 1 to 2, ovate-ellipsoid tubers giving rise to
an erect, round stem enveloped by 3 to 5 sheaths towards the base. The
plant carries 3-7 oblong, ovate-lanceshaped, pointed, hairless, entire
leaves, clustered below the middle of the stem. The plant blooms in the
later summer on a 10-40 cm long, many flowered raceme with basally
almost concave, shorter to as long as the ovary floral bracts and
carrying dull green flowers. Flowers are 2 cm across, somewhat similar
to
Habenaria furcifera, but have
linear-lanceshaped pointed lateral lobes of the lip, an ovate-oblong
mid-lobe coherent with galea and a thread-like faintly bulged
club-shaped spur. Modest Habenaria is found in Western Ghats.
