Pea is an annual, often climbing herb with stem hairless, glaucous. Leaves are paripinnately compound, axis ending in a branched tendril, leaflets 2-8, entire or toothed; stipules 1.5-8 cm long, obliquely ovate, toothed at least below, semi-stem-clasping at the base. Flower-cluster-stalk is up to twice as long as the stipule, 1-3-flowered. Flower white or vexillum lilac and reddish purple. Vexillum 16-30 mm long. Sepal-cup is 8-15 mm long, teeth longer than the tube, almost equal. Seedpod is 4-7 cm long, 1.2-1.7 cm broad. Pea is native to Mediterranian to Afghanistan. Pea has been cultivated for thousands of years, its seeds and leaves are cooked and eaten. It is also found as a garden escape.
